RESTORING CLOSENESS ΙΙ-My Life: the AfroGreeks commemorate the African Diaspora in Crete through an in-situ and online concert
18/05/2022 Heraklion, Crete, Greece
The action included a musical event with artists – protagonists of the AfroGreeks who musically connect history with the present and create a musical event – mosaic to refer to the history of the first black Greeks, drawing on the influences of a diverse range of musical genres, from traditional songs of the artists’ countries of origin combined with rebetika and Greek songs, to the combination of gospel, rap, trap music, afrobeat melodies and the presence of jazz and funk touches.
The event was designed by Døcumatism, together with Aristea Plevri, deputy Mayor of Culture of Heraklion, who sponsored the event, and took place with the creative collaboration of the art spaces Rodeo and the Intermission, the Municipalities of Chania and Heraklion, Vikelea Library and the Institute of Mediterranean Studies of Rethymnon.
Artists Jerome Kaluta, Adalou, Ubuntu Drum and Dance, Idra Kayne, The Royal Accord Singers, Afrokalipsi and Adédèjì in an inventive musical mosaic prove that Crete is timelessly (and tectonically) a dynamic halfway house between Europe and Africa.
