Public event and research in villages of Thrace with residents of African descent organized by Afro-Greek artist Nikos Kabasele
09/10/2021 Thrace, Greece
As part of the collective community project the AfroGreeks, accompanied by the Døcumatism team, Nikos Kabasele, a Greek-Congolese fine artist who lives in Alexandroupolis approached members of the African Diaspora who have been living in the region of Thrace for the past 3 centuries.
Prior to that, he had never imagined that people with his skin color existed in Northern Greece for so many centuries. Nikos Kabasele’s unique approach was filmed by Døcumatism. He approached the people of the villages in a very friendly manner and kindly asked if he could draw their portrait. This icebreaker immediately fostered space for discussion on facial characteristics, skin colour, and later on, generated talks and filmed interviews on national identity and a general sense of belonging.
