A public discussion about the exhibition Basic Needs at the Kypseli market
19/03/2022 Kypseli market, Athens, Greece
A public discussion at the Kypseli market with the artist Marilia Kolymbiri about her exhibition Basic Needs together with the anthropologist and performer Grace Nwoke from Døcumatism and the Kypselians: psychotherapist Kalli Alevizou, architect & curator Despina Damaskou, journalist Vasso Papagiannakopoulou, visual artist Angelos Plessas and filmmaker Menelaos Karamaghiolis.
All the speakers live in Kypseli and had experienced quarantine locked in Kypseli’s autonomous universe. The artist gave them a tour of the exhibition and then they discussed with her (and the rest of the audience) whether they consider the supermarket a space of freedom, and what role art plays in the neighborhoods of a big city. During the action there were outdoor musical performances and the event ended with a small (covid free) secret party.
Døcumatism curated and produced the exhibition “Basic needs” at the supermarket OK! and organized the discussion at the Kypseli market.
Marilia Kolymbiri’s artwork titled ”Basic needs”, which took place at the OK! supermarket in the neighbourhood of Kypseli, is an exhibition that calls for new dialogues between the consumers, the artist and the store managers, creating new dynamics for the space and an unpredictable use of the space as a gallery that creatively addresses consumerism, livelihood needs along with the ever-increasing need for safe and permissible encounters during the pandemic.
The actions were organized by Døcumatism and UnderAthens, curated by director Menelaos Karamagiolis and supported by OK!, Maria Artiki, Ioanna Nikolori and Kypseli market.
The exhibition was accompanied by actions with local residents, housewives, artists and journalists in a way that would restore proximity in an era when distances are imposed. A special relevant design was made to use the interior with the exterior of the store in an inventive way, respecting all COVID19 constraints in combination with the parallel use of the internet and social media.
