Radio and live stream multimedia event with protagonists of the AfroGreeks commencing Black History Month in Greece on Greek Public Television (ERT)
31/05/2022 ERT, Agia Paraskevi, Athens, Greece
As part of the ongoing collective project the AfroGreeks, a live event is organized to celebrate Black History Month in Greece. Black History Month is an international action with great impact and significant social benefit that is celebrated every year in many countries to honor black history through notable personalities of African descent and their achievements.
On 31/05/2022 Black History Month was celebrated for the first time in Greece. An idea originally presented by anthropologist Grace Nwoke who together with the Døcumatism team, the filmmaker Menelaos Karamaghiolis, the ANASA Cultural Center and the Greek Public Television (ERT) set up a multimedia radio show that was recorded live from studio D together with a group of Afro-Greeks who participated with questions. The recording was broadcast live online so that more questions could be asked by those who watched it.
In Greece the protagonists of the AfroGreeks project propose May as Black History Month, since it was the month in which the citizenship law was submitted for public consultation.
The Afro-Greek anthropologist Grace Nwoke together with the actor and musician Michael Afolayan organized a radio narrative that could be watched online and invited active participation by the audience. The narrative presented the annual celebration of black history as a dynamic starting point for the eradication of all forms of racism through knowledge, culture and dialogue, examining comprehensively and over time the key social phenomena that concern second-generation immigrants and people of African descent. Unknown and encouraging stories of heroes of African origin invaded the radio accompanied by the musical curation of Mc Yinka (Manolis Afolayan) creating a narrative that dynamically extends radio to the internet by incorporating the image. The aim was to promote the creative involvement of the listeners who participated actively and -perhaps- subversively in the creation of a radio show that was then broadcast on the frequency of the Third public radio station.
