Dance action at the solidarity protest for the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, Syntagma Square, Athens
05/06/2020 Syntagma Square, Athens, Greece
The protagonists of the AfroGreeks participated, collectively and creatively, through an art intervention, in the solidarity protest for the Black Lives Matter movement, at Syntagma Square in June 2020.
After the protest, the protagonists of the project attempted a symbolic reconciliation with the police, who did not allow them to approach the monument of the Unknown Soldier, played music on the spot and danced in front of the parliament. The dancers Mikel Ergar and Kofi Yadom, the DJ actor Tony Tsamouras, the performer Grace Nwoke and the band Quilombo transformed the public protest into an art event that creatively and peacefully integrated the Greek parliament, the adjacent Unknown Soldier monument, its guard and the police officers who were guarding the demonstration. Through dance and mime, alongside the police guarding the Parliament, the protagonists of the project (and street artists) made their own artistic statement about the effects of police violence, racial prejudice and racism in Greece.
