Encouraging stories of African Diaspora in Greece meet and empower young people of African descent, event hosted at the Embassy of Nigeria in Athens
11/06/2022 Embassy of Nigeria, Athens, Greece
As part of the collective project the AfroGreeks, a live event was organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Nigeria in Greece.
The theme of the event was the empowerment of the youth of the African community of Athens and for this reason, the invited speakers were the Nigerian doctor and director of the cardiology clinic of Alexandroupolis Yomi Lawal and the doctor (and former student) Solace Godwin, with whom there was a discussion on issues concerning second-generation Greeks and how they manage the challenges they face in their professional careers. A discussion that provided a broader perspective on the career orientation of members of the African diaspora and the critical issues of integration that they face.
The Døcumatism team led by the Afro-Greek artist Nikos Kampasele approached the members of the African diaspora who have been living in the region of Thrace for 3 centuries and met the thoracic surgeon Yomi Lawal who lives in Alexandroupolis. The doctor’s significant activist work in Northern Greece and his valuable contribution to the largest hospital in Thrace were the starting point for a discussion with cardiologist Solace Godwin and those attending the event.
Protagonists of the AfroGreeks and members of the African communities in Greece, mainly students and teenagers, attended the event. Also invited were Nigerian scholars who have applied for scholarships at the embassy or are already studying in Athens.
