Dreaming of a black Evzone – painting workshop for students of African origin with Irene Bazara, at the “16 Fokionos Negri” exhibition space, Kypseli, Athens
14-15/07/2020 “16 Fokionos Negri” exhibition space, Kypseli, Athens, Greece
Students of African origin at the 26th primary school in Kypseli participated in a two-day painting workshop as part of the AfroGreeks project. The theme was the creative management of concepts such as origin and homeland. They were under the guidance of their arts teacher (and visual artist) Irene Bazara -who designed the workshop- and the protagonist of the AfroGreeks Grace Nwoke, anthropologist, performer and active member of the African community in Greece.
Actor and model Vassilis Michas, shared with the children special knowledge about the pacing of the Evzones (a ceremonial unit of the Presidential Guard, dressed in iconic uniforms). Unfortunately, despite the special training he received, he did not eventually become an Evzon because of his Albanian origin. In the workshop the protagonists of the AfroGreeks Joshua Edoze and Tony Tsamouras were introduced to the special way the tsoliades (another common name for Evzones) dress and walked like Evzones, acting as models in the works painted by the students at the end of the workshop.
