Greekies vs Greekless: Film Screening, Video Installation and Public Discussion at the Hellenic Centre, London
The Døcumatism collective and filmmaker Menelaos Karamaghiolis presented the ten-year journey of the multimedia project Greekies through a screening of the documentary Greek Animal Rescue, alongside an exhibition of the project’s video installation and a public discussion.
The event, curated by Nayia Yiakoumaki, Director of the Hellenic Centre, featured a screening of the film Greek Animal Rescue, the starting point of the project, while another space in the building hosted a video installation featuring material from the ongoing Greekies project and from its practice as developed in Eleusis in 2023, where the moving image became a catalyst for public actions that foster dynamic social interaction and bring critical environmental issues to the forefront. Following the screening, Menelaos Karamaghiolis was joined in a discussion by curator Gareth Evans and Nayia Yiakoumaki. The event was also attended by adopted greekies now living in London.
Strays (animals, anti-heroes, locations, and stories) become the protagonists of the video installations and site-specific live events that make viewers eyewitnesses to difficult environmental and social issues, while proposing possible solutions. The term Greekies vs Greekless encompasses the project’s public actions and their interactive relationship with the audience, whether experienced live or through film. Guided by the stray animals of the Thriasian Plain that have been adopted abroad, the project initiates a broader discussion and redefinition of Greekness (both within and beyond Greece) seeking to include vulnerable and marginalized groups, Greeks of diverse backgrounds, and critical social and environmental issues.
